Cumberland County reports new grants, launches economic development plan and readies regional medical clinic

Cumberland County Administrator Mr. Hussain told the Board of Supervisors on March 3 that the county has received a new AFID grant and is starting a grant-funded economic development plan while preparing to host a regional RAM medical clinic later this month.
The update matters because the grants and planning effort fund multiple county priorities and the RAM clinic will provide free medical, dental and vision care to regional residents. Mr. Hussain said the county has applied for more than $2,000,000 in grants year to date and has been approved for about $750,000 across economic development, community development, parks and recreation, and public safety.
Mr. Hussain said the most recent award is a $37,000 AFID grant from the governor—s office designated for the Luther King Jackson building, and county staff have identified improvement needs that could match the grant. He said the county is beginning the procurement and planning process for an economic development strategic plan funded with grant dollars; the plan will be developed with the new business task force and is scheduled to kick off at an upcoming EDA meeting.
On the health side, Mr. Hussain and Dr. Jim of Cumberland County Public Schools both said the RAM Area Medical Clinic will be held March 29—March 30 at Cumberland High School. The clinic, county officials said, will offer dental, vision and medical screenings; the county expects the clinic can serve up to 500 people and recruit more than 200 volunteers. Mr. Hussain said the county will share details on the website, by text alerts and on Facebook.
County staff also gave a brief operational update on roads and maintenance: work-order volumes rose in recent months because of snow and debris removal, a service-treatment project for John Manwalk Road with contractor Starline is scheduled to begin in August, and staff are adjusting the placement of advance speed signs on a corridor to improve visibility.
The administrator summarized the grant wins and planning work as part of broader efforts to expand economic and community services while "striving to achieve more grant funding for the county," according to his remarks.
Looking ahead, Mr. Hussain said the county is awaiting additional grant awards and will post town-hall scheduling information on the county website once dates and locations are finalized.
