Court approves partnership to carry blood on county emergency apparatus

Chris (EMS leadership) presented a proposal to partner with UK’s trauma service and the blood center to carry blood on a battalion chief apparatus. The county would acquire coolers and warmers and carry two units of blood on the response vehicle. Staff said the contract is structured so the county pays only if blood is used; otherwise the blood is returned before expiration and is not billed.
Staff reported last year’s call data suggested at least 13 local patients would have benefited from available pre-hospital blood, and noted the benefit is clearest in penetrating trauma; medical bleeding events such as GI bleeds were cited as other possible uses. The upfront equipment cost cited in the meeting was $9,600. Protocols for on-scene use were prepared by UK and will be submitted to the state; staff expect a May go-live date and a public announcement coordinated with UK.
Magistrate David moved to approve the partnership and purchase; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
