The secretary told reporters that the G7 statement reflects "a growing acknowledgement" that the Chinese Communist Party has pursued economic and foreign policies that exploit the global order's benefits while shirking responsibilities, leaving other countries vulnerable to overreliance on China for critical supply chains and technologies.
He said the concern includes dependence on China for rare earth minerals, critical supply chains and key technologies and pointed to European frustrations over perceived overproduction and unfair competition, for example in electric vehicles. "They have imposed tariffs," he said, noting Canada and Europe have taken protective measures in some cases and the United States has imposed tariffs as well.
Asked about a future meeting between President Trump and Xi Jinping, the secretary said he expects the leaders will meet at some point but that no plans were confirmed at the briefing. He said leaders of powerful countries should communicate for global safety and stability.
