Committee receives update on fleet maintenance facility search; Cherry Street (MBX) under review

City staff provided the Infrastructure and Facilities Committee an update on March 13 about the search for a new fleet maintenance facility. The committee heard that the MBX property on Cherry Street is under active due diligence and that staff are investigating other candidate sites around the city.
"That property's still being looked at. They're doing some further investigation background on that site as well," a city staff member said, describing ongoing site work. The staff member said prior options — including a Menards plaza property and approximately 18 parcels reviewed with an outside consultant — were previously considered but did not yield a final location.
Committee members raised redevelopment concerns for the Cherry Street site because it is downtown riverfront property and could be attractive for future riverwalk or mixed-use development. One committee member flagged that using a prime riverfront parcel for a fleet yard would be a difficult sell if there is significant interest in riverfront redevelopment.
No formal action was taken; staff said they will continue property assessments and will update the committee as investigations proceed. The item will likely be part of future finance and economic development committee conversations if a preferred site is identified.
