The Somers Central School District Board of Education discussed a proposed one‑year merger that would allow North Salem students to play on Somers baseball teams for the upcoming season. District officials said North Salem’s letter of intent listed a maximum of eight student players (three ninth graders, three 10th graders and two 11th graders) who would transfer roster spots for the season.
Athletic staff including varsity coach J.T. Genovese and district representatives described how the merged players would be distributed across Somers freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams. District presenters said Somers currently has a rostered pool of approximately 50 students across grades 8–12 (4 seniors, 11 juniors, 10 sophomores, 14 ninth graders and 11 eighth graders were listed in one roster breakdown during discussion) and that an additional up to eight players from North Salem would not exceed typical roster “sweet spots” for freshman and JV teams. District officials said additional volunteer coaches would be used at JV and freshman levels and that the district would add two or three games at those levels to provide more playing time when possible.
Parents had raised concerns about playing time and logistics after news of the potential merger circulated. At the workshop two speakers gave public comment: Frank Rodio, a parent, thanked the board for pausing to evaluate the impacts, and student Max Grodeo thanked the board for listening to concerns.
Board members heard that the merger application under Section 1 is filed annually and, if approved, covers only the single season; officials emphasized the district would need to refile or renew any merger next year. The district also outlined administrative logistics: North Salem families would be expected to provide transportation to practices unless separate arrangements are made, and merger‑related financial reimbursements (busing, officials, etc.) would follow standard interdistrict billing procedures.
After questions from trustees, the board voted by voice to table the resolution so athletic staff could meet with parents at a scheduled parent meeting on Thursday and to allow final paperwork to be prepared before the March 18 athletic‑council deadline for merger approvals. The board instructed staff to return the item for consideration if additional information or a special meeting were needed before the deadline.
