Deputy Chief Agnew, appearing for the absent fire chief, told the Merit System Commission on March 6 that two entry-level firefighter offers have been accepted and the new hires will start next week.
Agnew said seven applicants for entry-level positions were excluded during background checks for various reasons and that she would place a list of excluded applicants on file for the commission. On lateral hiring, Agnew said the fire division received three lateral applicants; one was initially eligible but was eliminated during background screening, leaving no candidates on the lateral list and prompting the division to close that process for now.
Agnew told commissioners that Chief (not present) plans to return in April to request reopening the entry-level process; the commission heard that one position currently remains open with the possibility of a second later in the year. Commissioners noted three candidates are scheduled for lieutenant testing after the meeting.
There was no formal vote on the fire hiring update. The commission discussed how to handle separate lists for lateral, entry-level and cadet applicants and confirmed that lateral entries do not require commission certification at this stage.
