Lawrence schools ratify three-year safety-officer contract with performance contingencies

The Lawrence Alliance for Education voted Feb. 26 to ratify a three-year contract with Laborers International Union Local 175 covering school safety officers, retroactive to July 1, 2024 and running through June 30, 2027.
Superintendent Carrero explained negotiators provided a summary of contract changes and noted the contract went to the district’s school counsel for review. The contract provides 4% increases on each July 1 across the three-year term and includes a 2% market-rate adjustment effective July 1, 2024, intended to align pay with surrounding districts.
Board members pressed HR staff on performance contingencies and market analyses. Lizvette Gonzales, the district’s HR director, told the board that salary increases are contingent on satisfactory performance under the contract and that a market-rate analysis informed the initial 2% adjustment.
Gonzales said: "In order to receive the increase, you do have to have satisfactory performance. That's part of the agreement." The contract also adds professional development requirements and updated uniform policies for safety officers.
The board approved the ratification by roll call; members Arlene Garcia, Juana Matias and Maria Mueller voted yes and the motion passed. The superintendent said the contract will proceed for signature through the chair, mayor’s office and DESE as required.
