Dave Williams, treasurer of the Friends of Potters Field, told the Dunn County Highway Committee on March 12 that his volunteer group raised funds to fence Potter Cemetery and would like county permission to pursue a state historic marker and a small parking/turnaround near the “Welcome to Menomonie” sign.
Williams said the group would pay for the historic sign and for a modest gravel parking area but needs permission or an easement to place the improvements on county-owned land adjacent to the county’s highway rest area. Highway staff said creating an easement is feasible, that the county previously granted an easement to the City of Menomonie to access the nearby welcome sign, and recommended working with county counsel and the county surveyor to prepare legal descriptions.
Committee members expressed support. One member suggested budgeting for the sign application cost in 2026; staff noted the state sign application requires an easement be in place before the sign order is submitted. The committee did not take a formal vote at the meeting but directed staff to pursue the easement documentation so the Friends of Potters Field can submit the state historic sign application and later pursue a small gravel turnaround/parking area.
