Needham High seniors propose rain garden and trail improvements at DPW site and town forest

A student team from Needham High School’s Greater Boston Project presented a design and implementation plan for a rain garden at the Department of Public Works site and proposed volunteer trail improvements in the Needham Town Forest.
Project snapshot: Students said the proposed rain garden would collect runoff from the DPW parking lot and building roof and would be roughly 150–200 square feet in the proposed location near the front of the DPW building. The design calls for a shallow, planted basin with moisture‑tolerant species at the low point and progressively drier, pollinator‑friendly plantings at the margins. The students proposed red‑twig dogwood, marginal wood fern, winterberry (Ilex verticillata) and Virginia sweetspire in their initial palette and said they plan to supplement with donated native species and seed mixes (a FACWET meadow mix and a mesic–dry pollinator mix).
Why it matters: A functioning rain garden can reduce runoff volume, filter pollutants and provide habitat and pollinator value. The students emphasized a two‑year monitoring commitment, demarcating the restored area with posts and conservation placards, and a plan to engage community volunteers for planting and future trail work.
Commission feedback and technical notes: Commissioners and staff praised the students’ research and recommended native‑only plant lists (Commissioner Paulina noted Virginia sweetspire is not native to New England and recommended replacing it). Commissioners also recommended site soil profiling (to verify infiltration rates and design depth), porous‑media excavation and the need to avoid stressing an existing oak (pin oak) near the proposed basin. Staff (Debbie Anderson) and the town’s tree warden (Edward Olsen) will coordinate on tree and site details. The commission indicated the project appears to be an informational, on‑town property volunteer project and does not require a formal filing under the Wetlands Protection Act as presented; students should coordinate final construction details with DPW and Conservation staff.
Trail work: The students also proposed standardized trail markers, improved kiosks and second planks for swamp‑crossing sections in the Town Forest. Conservation staff said the town is pursuing funding for broader trail upgrades this spring and volunteers could be incorporated into installation if funding and scheduling permit.
Next steps: Students were encouraged to refine species lists to native taxa, supply a simple excavation/soil profile for the rain garden, and coordinate construction timing and O&M with DPW and Conservation staff. The commission indicated it would share materials from a recent trail funding presentation and contact students about volunteer opportunities if funding is approved.
