Board approves policy 6.34 on second reading; directs policy committee to separate cell-phone rules

The Burnsville Public School District Board of Education voted unanimously on March 13 to approve policy 6.34 on second reading, and board members directed the policy committee to return with a clearer, standalone cell-phone policy and accompanying regulations.
Board members debated whether to separate cell-phone rules from the broader technology policy so families and staff could find the rules easily; Chair Werb and several directors said a separate, searchable policy for cell phones would be helpful. Director Anderson moved to approve the policy on second reading; Director Mickelson seconded. After discussion the motion passed unanimously.
Directors requested that (1) the policy committee work with MSBA (Minnesota School Boards Association) model language and return both the revised policy and the proposed administrative regulations together, (2) the regulations be attached to the student handbook or otherwise linked so families can readily find them before the new school year, and (3) any disciplinary guidelines be included in the regulations. Several directors suggested a target of May for the committee to return updates so the policy and regulations would be in place for the following school year.
No immediate changes to student handbooks were made at the meeting; the board took action to approve the policy text as presented and to send the item back to policy for clarification and the creation of separate regulations.
