Connor Schiff, committee staff, explained the nickname dates to the late 1800s and has appeared on license plates, memorabilia and the 2007 state quarter.
Senator Jeff Wilson, the bill’s sponsor, described the measure as a short, familiar designation that formalizes a longstanding nickname. There were no testifiers signed to speak on the bill, and the committee chair closed the hearing after the sponsor’s brief remarks.
