VMI reinforces academic support for struggling cadets; Miller Academic Center expands interventions

Academic leadership described a Cadet Academic Recovery program run by the Miller Academic Center that requires cadets with low GPAs to participate in tailored interventions: meetings with academic coordinators, group study, tutoring, organizational coaching and required sign‑offs. The office said it started the CAR pilot in fall for upperclassmen and has extended it this academic year to rats.
Why it matters: The institute presented data showing the return rate for cadets who finished a semester on academic monitoring (ACCPRO/ACRO). Staff said roughly 62 cadets finished the earlier semester on ACCRO and 57 returned; this and other metrics aim to prevent attrition later in the curriculum. Academic staff and the dean noted concerns that some incoming students have large gaps in math coursework and that identifying those gaps earlier could reduce later academic failure.
Accreditation and rankings: VMI briefers reported recent engagement with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and said ABET and AACSB reviews produced clean or largely positive results; final accreditation reports were described as pending or recently received depending on the accreditor.
Next steps: Academic leaders said they are refining early‑warning analytics and will work with enrollment management and the Miller Academic Center to identify incoming students who need pre‑arrival support, and continue to develop the recovery and tutoring pipeline.
