County weighing purchase of fingerprint scanner to improve court processing and reporting

Lee County finance committee members on March 13 discussed purchasing a fingerprint scanner for the courthouse to ensure fingerprint processing and criminal-history reporting for defendants released under site-and-release and related policies.
Charlie (county staff) told the committee that under the statesite-and-release provisions and local pretrial processes, many defendants are not being fingerprinted at arrest or before release. Judges have been ordering defendants to report to the sherifffor fingerprinting, but many defendants fail to comply. Charlie said the lack of timely fingerprint capture causes gaps in criminal-history reporting and could result in misreported records.
The county administrator's office presented a vendor estimate of about $7,490 for a fingerprint scanner and some equipment add-ons; the total project cost including installation and annual service/maintenance was estimated at about $14,000. County staff said some restricted funds reviewed were not allowable for the purchase and that the recommended funding source would be a reallocation of ARPA capital funds or the county capital balance.
Committee members agreed that the matter should be moved to the executive committee for a final funding recommendation and full-board action. No finance-committee vote to purchase was taken at the March 13 meeting.
