The San Benito County Board of Supervisors voted on Feb. 11 to restrict use of county EV chargers to county business and authorized staff to create an employee‑access policy with charges to recover costs. The board also instructed staff not to proceed with replacement or full repair of additional chargers pending vendor proposals and grant opportunities.
Staff report: A county staff member briefed the board on the current status of three chargers on county property. One charger is physically present but not connected to an online management network; one port at a second location was functional and the other was not; a third charger is offline and requires replacement. Staff recommended connecting existing units to an online vendor (for user authentication, fee collection and data reporting) and said partial repair and network activation could cost in the low thousands, while full replacement and repairs could be in the tens of thousands.
Board action and rationale: Supervisors expressed concern about ongoing county cost and liability, and that public users had been charging free of county expense for an extended period. The board voted 5–0 to: (1) restrict public charging at county chargers; (2) permit county employees to use chargers under an access policy that recovers electricity and operational costs (staff to draft fee options); and (3) defer repair/replacement of the remaining chargers while staff seeks vendor proposals and potential grant funding. Staff said one immediate step will be reconnecting any operational unit to a vendor dashboard to enable user management and reporting.
