Public Art Commission: four sculptures install next week; mural and bus-art projects move forward

The Concord Public Art Commission told the City Council it is ready to install four public sculptures in the downtown streetscape next week and provided updates on multiple art projects, including a commissioned mural and bus-wrap concepts.
Commission representatives said 31 sculpture submissions were reviewed for four designated streetscape locations; mounting plates are complete and artist contracts have been signed. The sculptures are leased for one year, with the program expected to move to a two-year interval after the initial rotation.
Jake Somerauer was selected to design a major streetscape mural; staff shared examples of his work and said the artist will refine a locally informed design after stakeholder input. For the Les Myers tennis facility, a selection panel chose Drift Mural Company from 44 applicants; the mural is scheduled for late April or May.
The commission also reported progress on a mural-grant program (planning and legal confirmed murals are not treated as signs) and continued work on public-art bus wraps; the transit commission voted to keep the bus-wrap project moving forward while staff and the transit partners refine layout and funding approaches.
Why it matters: These projects place new artwork in public spaces, support commissioned artists, and use temporary leasing to refresh downtown displays. Bus-wrap and mural programs involve coordination with transit and state transportation officials for larger infrastructure projects.
