Board trims committees, creates focus on tourism by renaming economic advisory panel

The Board of Supervisors moved to pare back standing committees and to narrow the county’s economic‑development advisory work toward tourism for 2025.
On a unanimous vote, supervisors authorized elimination of five bodies that staff said duplicated board‑level work: the county facilities committee, the information technology committee, the homeless task force, the home loan committee and the landfill committee. Chair and staff said most of those matters will come to the full board for regular updates and that staff groups and targeted working groups will continue technical work.
Separately, the board voted 3‑2 to change the Economic Advisory Committee’s bylaws: the board approved renaming it the Tourism Advisory Committee, reducing membership from 11 to 7, and asking member organizations to nominate which representatives should continue on the smaller body. The motion passed after discussion over whether workforce development, small‑business support and other economic priorities would remain visible if the committee narrows its scope.
Supporters said the change will help the county deliver concrete tourism projects this year and better marshal staff resources. Several supervisors and committee members urged that workforce development and small‑business assistance remain central to any tourism strategy; at least one supervisor said those activities will continue through separate county efforts and partner organizations such as Visit San Benito.
Implementation steps include returning a resolution and amended bylaws with the updated committee name, membership and selection method for board approval.
