County picks vendors for household hazardous-waste day; staff note Army Corps permit and DEQ review for Texas Flat drainage

The Hancock County Commission on March 3 approved vendor contracts for the county—s household hazardous-waste collection day and recorded an Army Corps of Engineers letter about permitting for remaining Texas Flat drainage work.
Jeff Loftus, representing GRPC, asked the board to approve a cost proposal from Magnolia Data Solutions to collect electronic waste and a separate proposal from Complete Environmental and Remediation Services to collect household hazardous waste during the collection day. Both proposals were approved unanimously, 5-0.
Loftus said the collection day is scheduled for April 5 but noted a scheduling conflict: "We have the date, April 5 ... it is the same time as the 'Touch the Truck.'" He and other staff said vendors reported difficulty changing the date because of vendor scheduling commitments.
Planning-related items discussed during the meeting included approval of planning commission minutes from Feb. 6 and a staff update about a proposed convenience store at the Corner 603 site in Texas Flat. Planning staff reported that the property had been split through PNZ and that the Department of Environmental Quality had visited the site after adjoining property owners raised concerns about proximity to a creek. Staff said DEQ and the developer had taken corrective steps.
County staff also moved to spread on the minutes a letter from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stating that a permit and a rate-of-entry authorization are required for the remainder of the Texas Flat drainage work; the commission approved that action 5-0.
