Board approves switch to Symbium software for online roof-mounted solar permits to meet state rules

The Shasta County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved, on Feb. 4, a contract to adopt a new automated permit-processing platform to meet state requirements for online permitting of certain rooftop solar installations.
Assistant Director of Resource Management Adam Fieseler told the board the proposed vendor, Symbium, provides a faster online plan-check service for roof-mounted solar and has expressed interest in expanding to other permit types, including ground-mounted systems that currently lack vendor-supported online plan check.
Supervisor Kallstrom pulled the item for discussion and asked specifically whether the system could be expanded to handle ground-mounted solar in the future. Fieseler said Symbium has indicated interest and that county staff will pursue additional conversations to broaden the platform’s scope if feasible.
The board approved the vendor change 5-0. Supervisors said they want permitting streamlined and faster turnarounds on solar plan checks, where applicants have sometimes waited weeks. Staff said the new software should help meet the state’s California Automated Permit Processing Program requirements and reduce delays for rooftop solar installations.
Vote: 5-0.
