Members of the Haslet Parks and Recreation Board said Wednesday they want a landscape architect to review the planned Veterans Memorial Garden before final work begins, citing long-term maintenance and material concerns.
Chuck Figler and other board members said they had re-examined the construction bid and worried the project as written might not match the memorial’s long-term appearance and maintenance needs. James Shepherd, parks maintenance staff, flagged concerns about materials being placed under memorial features and recommended professional landscape-architect input.
Board members noted budget availability and city staff said a $50,000 line item exists for the memorial project. The board nevertheless requested a revised design review so members can be confident the finished garden will be durable and require manageable maintenance. The board chair said the city council previously approved funding and that final council approval will still be required for the completed design and costs beyond the approved amount.
Board members emphasized the memorial’s symbolic importance and asked that final plans include durable materials and a maintenance plan so the site is presentable for Memorial Day ceremonies. The board agreed to coordinate with public-works staff and to present recommended changes and any architect input to city council as needed.
