Commission adopts Wilkinson House preservation plan and forwards designation to council

The Carmel Historic Preservation Commission voted to adopt the staff-preservation plan for the Wilkinson House and moved to forward that material to city council for consideration of local designation and protection.
Staff provided a multi-year history of the property, explaining that the commission first placed the parcel under interim protection in 2018 when demolition appeared imminent and later facilitated the property’s donation and transfer to parties committed to rehabilitation. Staff described the house’s significance as an early settlement-era farmstead with surviving fabric that includes early timber construction, exterior masonry and a two-story gallery porch. The report noted later additions and changes but said the house retains a high degree of integrity.
Matt Uber, identified in the meeting as the property owner and a commissioner, spoke in support of the plan and thanked staff for the research, and asked staff to update the plan’s photographs to reflect recent rehabilitation progress before sending materials to council. Staff agreed to update photographs and include a current photo set in the package to council.
A commissioner moved to accept the Wilkinson House preservation plan as recommended by staff; the motion was seconded and passed on a voice vote. Staff told the commission the next steps will include updated photography, preparation of an ordinance package, and forwarding the recommendation to city council for final designation and possible preservation covenant recording.
Staff also described that if the property is relocated and placed on a new legal parcel, the commission and city council would consider designation of the relocated parcel and review a preservation plan and design work that will come to the commission for approval.
