Sun Valley CAB approves minutes and unanimously backs RTC support letter for Sun Valley Boulevard Protect grant

The Sun Valley Citizen Advisory Board on Feb. 1 approved the minutes of its Jan. 4 meeting and voted unanimously to sign a letter of support for a Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) application for a federal PROTECT grant to redesign Sun Valley Boulevard and address chronic drainage and flood issues.
The RTC presentation at the meeting described a corridor project officials estimate will cost tens of millions of dollars and said the grant would cover a substantial portion of design and construction costs, with state highway partners (NDOT) expected to contribute additional funds and the county accepting maintenance responsibility after completion. Paul Nelson, government affairs officer at the Regional Transportation Commission, told the board the grant application aims to fund resiliency and pedestrian-safety work and that the RTC would contribute toward design and some construction costs.
The board moved and seconded a motion to sign a letter of support for the PROTECT grant and voted “aye” unanimously. The board asked staff to update draft language before the chair signs the document after the meeting. Earlier in the meeting the board also approved the minutes of its Jan. 4 session by voice vote; that motion carried unanimously.
Why this matters: The PROTECT grant and related funding are intended to pay for a redesign of Sun Valley Boulevard including drainage work, pedestrian improvements and transit accommodations; proponents said the work would make the corridor safer and reduce flood damage. A county manager’s update at the same meeting also described a separate county-led effort to transfer the state-managed roadway to county maintenance as part of the long-term plan to rebuild the corridor.
Next steps: RTC staff will finalize the grant application with supporting letters; the deadline mentioned at the meeting is Feb. 24. County and RTC staff said NDOT and other partners would be engaged if the grant advances to later stages.
