Santa Rita Union board approves elementary boundary change, offers grandfathering for current Santa Rita families

The Santa Rita Union School Board on a 3–0 vote approved a new elementary-school boundary for the 2025–26 school year and authorized a voluntary, soft launch that lets current Santa Rita families opt to remain at that campus while new enrolling students would be routed to McKinnon.
The change is intended to balance enrollment between two nearby elementary sites and to smooth matriculation as fifth graders move to middle school. District staff said families were allowed to opt in this year with the understanding that the new boundary would become permanent for the coming school year.
District staff said the boundary proposal included a grandfathering provision: families who currently have children at Santa Rita may keep those children at the school, while newly enrolling students would be assigned to McKinnon. Staff also said bus routes were identified to support the change.
Trustee Patel voiced support for the accommodations during transition and emphasized the need to address overcapacity and undercapacity between the two sites. Trustee Arellano said the numbers appeared practical and supported the motion.
The board moved and seconded the measure and approved it by recorded vote “Motion 3 0.” No additional conditions were listed in the board discussion.
Board members said the change is expected to improve playground safety and cafeteria service and to provide more balanced educational options across the two sites.
