Miami Lakes subcommittee reviews military-banner reapplications, flags four for missing documents

The Town of Miami Lakes Military Tribute Banner Subcommittee spent a special meeting reviewing recent reapplications for the program on March 5, 2025, finding many submissions complete but flagging at least four applicants for missing documentation or a verified connection to Miami Lakes.

The subcommittee convened to reconcile a town list of banner recipients with recent online reapplications and older records. Committee members said approvals included Chad Sorrentino and Irving Bennett (the latter noted as approved provided verification of veteran status), Ruben Gallardo (reapproved after committee review of his DD Form 214), Ronald Green, William Nifton and others whose documents were complete. The subcommittee asked staff to contact individual applicants with missing items and to reconcile duplicates and older banner records in the town database.

Staff and committee members also discussed administrative details: the town's records include older banners and a subset of applications that remain on file; the committee uses a two-year recency criterion for the active application list; duplicates and entries carried over from prior years were noted as an administrative issue to be cleaned up. One staff member reminded the panel that records submitted to the town, even if redacted, remain public information.

Discussion versus decisions: the meeting primarily involved document review and administrative determinations by the subcommittee about individual applications rather than a formal council vote. Committee members repeatedly emphasized the need to set clear, written selection criteria (for example, residency or familial nexus to Miami Lakes, service distinctions such as Purple Heart or other prioritizations) that the subcommittee will apply when capacity is limited.
