Weston board adopts six superintendent specifications, authorizes national search advertising

The Weston Board of Education voted Monday to adopt a six-item candidate profile for the district's next superintendent and authorized School Leadership LLC to publish the vacancy nationally.
The board approved the specifications after a presentation by consultants Marty Brooks and Rena Beater of School Leadership LLC, who summarized community survey and focus-group results used to shape the profile. The consultants said the outreach effort produced 437 survey responses and 102 participants in focus groups and public forums.
The specifications the board adopted describe a superintendent who is, in the consultants' words, “a bold, innovative, and visionary educator with deep expertise in curriculum, instruction, and social emotional development,” and who is also a “transparent and proactive communicator” and a “strategic leader with expertise in school finance.” The full specification development report will be provided to the district after the board's adoption and will be posted under the district superintendent-search tab, the consultants said.
School Leadership LLC told the board it will launch the search immediately and conduct active national outreach. The consultants said they will target experienced leaders — including successful incumbent superintendents — and expect to present a recommended slate of about five to seven semifinalists the week of March 31, with second-round interviews the week of April 7 and a possible appointment the week of April 21, pending background checks.
Board member David read the motion to adopt the specifications and Sharon seconded; the motion carried. The board also voted to authorize School Leadership LLC to arrange publication of position advertisements and to begin recruitment and outreach.
Why it matters: Weston officials and the consultants emphasized the search will be national and competitive, seeking candidates with demonstrated instructional leadership and fiscal acumen to guide a small, high-performing district with aging facilities and a limited commercial tax base.
The board will review application materials and decide which candidates to interview; the consultants said they will present the full applicant paperwork and recommend finalists who best match the adopted specifications.
Notes: The search timetable and deadline for applications were stated by the consultants as March 24 for the application window. The consultants asked to meet with the board to present semifinalists during the week of March 31.
