School Board Approves Scope of Coats Elementary Boundary Study to Address Severe Overcrowding

The Fairfax County School Board on March 13 approved the scope for a boundary study intended to address overcrowding at Coats Elementary School, directing staff to develop boundary-change scenarios and return to the Board for additional meetings and a public hearing.
Staff told the Board Coats operates at roughly 137% program capacity in 2024-25 (not including temporary trailers) and currently has approximately 20 temporary classrooms on site. The recommended scope covers Coats and 17 surrounding elementary schools across multiple pyramids, plus relevant AAP (Advanced Academic Program) center boundaries. In presenting the recommendation, facilities staff cited projected enrollment growth and recent development near Coats as drivers of sustained overcrowding.
Board member Miss Lady moved the motion to approve the scope and Mr. McElveen seconded. Several trustees said the data supported the broader scope because nearby schools have limited spare capacity. The Board approved the scope as presented; staff will hold additional community meetings in April, develop options, and return to the Board with recommendations, including a public hearing before final action.
