Norwalk pilots program evaluation, builds public dashboards to show progress and inequities

Ald en Burnham and members of the district data team described a two‑part effort to expand evidence‑based decision making: (1) pilot program evaluations that mix quantitative analysis with focus groups, and (2) dashboards that let principals and the public monitor key indicators.
Alden Burnham (Director of Educational Data Strategy) and a data analyst described work to evaluate My Brother’s Keeper/My Sister’s Keeper (MBK/MSK) as a pilot case. The evaluation combined Panorama survey results, matched quantitative comparisons, and student focus groups to assess impacts on school belonging and engagement.
The data team also built internal dashboards that principals are using to compare assessments, monitor chronic absenteeism with time‑intelligence comparisons, and track suspension data. Staff said principal adoption is high and the dashboards are being used for planning and monitoring. A public‑facing dashboard was demonstrated via QR code; staff said it updates nightly and includes high‑level district metrics (attendance, suspensions, enrollment and multilingual learner counts).
The data group presented the work as an example of how the district will expand systematic program evaluation to other initiatives and to make data more actionable for building leaders.
