Facilities panel refers nutrition center bread contract to full board after members request review

During the March 5 Facilities Committee meeting, district staff said the Nutrition Center’s proposed bread contract with Shams Bakery had recently been awarded after a single bidder responded to a district solicitation. Committee members said the contract was not included in the meeting packet and asked for time to review it before the full board considers approval.
Guillermo Steele, food and nutrition services presenter (Bridgeport School District), said he would email the contract text to committee members during the call. Committee member Albert Benahan said he preferred to see contracts in the packet before voting and asked staff to place the item on the next board agenda to allow review and public consideration. A motion to place the nutrition center bread contract on the next full-board agenda for discussion was made and seconded and then approved by the Facilities Committee.
Steele told the committee the awarded vendor is Shams Bakery and that the contract term discussed in the meeting would run for approximately one and a half years and would take effect upon the date of award. He said the new award was lower than the existing contract. Committee members asked the staff to provide the contract text and a budget/price comparison before the full-board discussion.
The committee did not vote to approve the contract at the Facilities meeting; members directed staff to include the contract and supporting documentation in the upcoming full-board packet so the board can review and act at a later public meeting.
