Board names planned disc golf course for alumnus Blaine Whitworth after donor gift

The board approved naming a planned disc golf course on the site of the former fraternity complex the Blaine Whitworth Disc Golf Course in honor of alumnus Blaine Whitworth, who was killed in Warrensburg. The Whitworth family and the Blaine Whitworth Go Big or Go Home Foundation committed $14,000 toward construction of the course and provided additional personal gifts that the administration said cover more than half the cost of construction and associated amenities.

Dr. Best told the board the gift surpasses the 50% threshold the university typically uses for naming recommendations, so he recommended naming the course in Whitworth’s honor. Jeff Ream, assistant director of outdoor education and a competitive disc golfer, said the administration plans a ribbon cutting on April 12 (Greek Week) and aims to finish construction by April 5, with some work ongoing afterward.

Board members asked about the possibility of future repurposing of the property for housing or other campus needs; administration officials said the university retains authority to redevelop campus land and that construction methods (removable poles and sleeves for baskets) were being used to preserve flexibility. Ream also said the university has a club team (about 15 members) and already hosts intramural disc golf; officials noted the facility could support recruiting and collaboration with nearby Whiteman Air Force Base.

A motion to approve the naming was made by Governor Abney and seconded by Governor Dandaran; the board approved the recommendation by voice vote. "All in favor? Aye. Anyone opposed? Motion carries," Collier said.
