Board considers tightening legislative priorities; members propose state funding for tech staff, TA-to-teacher pipelines and limits on vouchers

Mr. Jenks presented a draft of the board’s 2025 legislative program and compared it with the North Carolina PTA and NCSBA priorities. He said the draft contains condensed language on compensation, recruitment, equity, calendars and capital needs and that it will return to the board for refinement.
Board members debated specific asks to include in the final program. Meredith said the board should consider language seeking state support for staff who are technology experts in schools. Ronnie suggested the district pursue a shorter set of targeted, story-based priorities organized around public-education resources (compensation and support staff), technology and capital/facilities. Vicki recommended including TA2Teach or similar grow-your-own teacher initiatives to strengthen teacher pipelines and diversify the workforce.
Barbara Fetters urged clearer, stronger language on public funding for public schools and raised concerns about vouchers and charter expansion. The chair noted local calendar bills had already been filed in the legislature and that broader calendar-flexibility bills were active as well.
Mr. Jenks said staff would incorporate the board’s feedback into a revised draft and attempt to schedule a meeting with the district’s state legislators in a single session to discuss priorities.
