Board briefed on Title IX regulation update and optional weapons-policy language; no vote taken

District staff briefed the Yelm Community Schools board on Feb. 27 about a federal-court action that effectively returned the Title IX regulation framework to the 2020 standard and how that affects the district's civil-rights procedures, staff said.
"Recently a federal court vacated [the more recent Title IX rule], and so for Washington this change primarily impacts how we handle the Title IX portion of harassment complaints," a staff member identified as policy/legal staff (name not specified) told the board. The staff member said Washington state law affords broader coverage for harassment than federal law, meaning the district must reconcile both requirements in its policy and procedures.
Staff said the version of the 2020 regulations included in the board packet had been reviewed by district counsel and streamlined for clarity. The board was told that staff have completed procedures and will upload them into the district's case-management system.
The board also received information on policy 4210, "Regulation of Dangerous Weapons on School Premises." Staff said the policy had not substantially changed since 2016 and that one section of the recommended language was strictly optional. "One board member recommended we leave out the optional section," staff reported; no formal recommendation was made by the state's association, and the board heard the item as information only.
No votes were taken on either item during the meeting. Staff said they will return with any requested edits at a subsequent board reading.
