Public Works Director Luke King told the Board of Commissioners the city will restart its street sweeper schedule April 1 and asked the police department to issue warnings through April to give residents time to move parked vehicles.
“For the month of April is for the PD to give out warnings, to try to get folks acclimated to moving their vehicles again,” King said, explaining the warning period is intended to reduce the risk of damage to vehicles and to the sweeper.
King reminded commissioners that the current ordinance schedules sweeper operation from April 1 through Nov. 30. The commission discussed how narrow streets with consistent parking make sweeping difficult and heard there is an existing process for petitioning to remove a street from the sweep list. Commissioners and staff discussed specific blocks—including portions of Fourth Street, West Third and West Second—where narrow lanes or heavy parking may make sweeping impractical or unsafe. Several commissioners suggested targeted outreach such as flyers and social media posts and noted the option to sweep some narrow areas during daytime hours when residents are likely at work.
King said the city will not unilaterally remove streets from the list without a petition or council direction, but will work with neighborhood petitioners to amend the ordinance if the community requests an exclusion. The stated objective of continuing sweeping is to keep storm drains and clean-outs clear of debris and to reduce weed growth and dust in right-of-way areas.
