Chief judge outlines Law Day and pro bono recognition; mock-trial events drew large participation

Chief Judge Villa told the Kane County Judicial Public Safety Committee on March 13 that the judiciary will run Law Day events this year with a theme from the American Bar Association and will expand public-facing programs in future years. He also said courts plan to recognize pro bono lawyers and guardian ad litem volunteers with an October event.
Villa said Law Day — a national program from the American Bar Association — carries the 2025 theme "E Pluribus Unum" (out of many, one). He said the plan is to invite local high-school sophomores and juniors to submit essays; finalists will receive cash awards funded by the Kane County Bar Foundation. "It's gonna be a really nice event," Villa said.
Jason and other court staff reported that the county recently hosted high-school mock trial competitions (St. Charles East won the high-school round) and a college mock-trial event that brought approximately 700 people to the judicial center over a weekend. Villa said the judiciary will also hold a pro bono recognition event in October to thank volunteer attorneys and guardian ad litems.
Villa reported that a long-running technology project that affects the courts remains unfinished but staff had been told by the state it may be completed this month; no completion was announced at the March 13 meeting.
Committee members praised court programming and congratulated organizers of the mock trials; no formal committee action was taken on these items.
