Superintendent Moises Aguirre told the Sweetwater Union High School District Board on March 10 that a federal grant supporting a program called Charting My Path was cut effective February. The program previously funded services for approximately 164 students in the district and was a $2,000,000 grant over two years, the superintendent said.
Aguirre told trustees the grant termination was a federal action and that he wanted to notify staff, students and families. He also highlighted steps the district has taken to stabilize finances: the district’s audit returned without material exceptions this year, and administrators said changes such as adjusting school periods from eight to six helped avoid layoffs and the issuance of March 15 reduction‑in‑force notices.
The superintendent’s remarks were part of a broader district update that also listed recent construction groundbreakings, a STEM fair and athletic achievements. Aguirre said the district’s budget work and “prudent and responsible” management allowed officials to proceed this year without layoffs despite the grant loss.
