Police report: Mound plans focused enforcement on weight-restricted streets, hires and K-9 training underway

At the March 11 meeting a police representative updated the council on enforcement priorities and staffing.
The department said weight restrictions are in effect and officers will actively enforce them day and night; targeted enforcement on West Edge Boulevard was requested by a resident and the department said it will concentrate efforts there. The police representative said specialized enforcement and periodic placement of speed-trailer units (radar trailers) will be used to monitor and deter speeders; staff offered to place a trailer on or near Deerwood/Beachwood at the request of a resident who volunteered private permission for placement.
The department reported that the application window for one open officer position has closed with four or five applicants; interviews are scheduled to begin next week. Training sessions were announced: spring use-of-force training for officers will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays next week. The department said the new department canine, Onyx, a young German shepherd, began training and showed early progress on obedience and handling.
Councilors asked for continuing updates on readouts from traffic trailers and for notice to be given to members of the police commission. No formal council actions or expenditures were decided at the meeting.
