Commercial tenants plan a Marina Tenant Association; city staff say startup funding, nonprofit structure under discussion

Commercial tenants at Clearwater’s Beach Marina told the Marine and Aviation Advisory Board on March 6 that they are organizing a Marina Tenant Association and seeking initial funding and support from local government.
TJ Leonard, who identified himself as a boat captain for the Stella Fishing Company, said tenants moved to the east end of the dock during construction and are working together to form an association. “I wanna give a huge shout out to Mike, Bill, and Larry down there. They’ve been a major asset to making this transition during these tough times as easy as possible,” Leonard said.
Leonard said the proposed Marina Tenant Association would be a nonprofit with five board members and associated members. He told the board the group is exploring support from the city and county and estimated start-up costs of approximately $30,000. The tenants’ stated goal is to promote the marina to visitors and locals after construction and to offer tiered membership packages and incentives for tenant participation, including marketing and online presence.
William Hudson, division manager for the Marine and Aviation Department, confirmed the commercial fleet’s move to the repaired east dock and thanked tenants for cooperating with the relocation on short notice so construction could continue.
No formal city commitment of the requested start-up funding was made at the meeting; staff and tenants said they would continue to coordinate outside the meeting.
