GMS building project moves into design finalization; community newsletter planned

The Galvin Middle School (GMS) building project is advancing from schematic design to refined design and permitting, district leaders told the school committee on Feb. 27.
The school building committee approved contract amendments for the project team (architect and construction manager) at its most recent meeting, and the design firm AI3 is completing more detailed programming and virtual walkthroughs of proposed interior layouts, district leaders said. The team has met with educators, custodial staff and food‑service staff to refine classroom and operational details, and project planners are preparing permitting documents to keep the schedule on track for summer preparatory work.
Superintendent and project leaders said the team is also finalizing a GMS project newsletter, to be published every other month, intended as a short update for community members and families. Topics under active discussion include construction phasing and traffic/drop‑off changes during the multi‑year construction window, choices about wayfinding and color palettes, and coordination with public safety for field closures and parking during construction.
Officials noted logistical work remains: finalizing gate installations at two elementary sites, balancing priorities among several capital projects and reconciling quotes and scope changes before town meeting. The district said it will post regular status updates and encouraged residents to follow school‑building committee meetings for project details once the design moves into broader community outreach.
