Board recognizes AmeriCorps members and leaders for decade of service supporting Port Angeles schools

The Port Angeles School District Board of Directors on March 13 recognized current AmeriCorps members and thanked program leaders for a decade of service supporting classrooms and community partners.
District presenters said the program is in its 10th year locally, currently has seven members serving across six schools, and partners with eight community organizations such as the YMCA and United Way to expand students’ service and supports. Presenters also noted a positive outcome: roughly 21 past AmeriCorps members have remained in the district as teachers or paraeducators and several have used the program as a step toward teaching degrees.
“We are seeing a leap in productivity and integration when members serve a second year,” the AmeriCorps presenter told the board, noting stronger teacher integration and more consistent academic support in the high school this year. The board presented small certificates and recognition items to members onstage and encouraged continued community support for member recruitment and program funding.
Board members and district staff stressed the program’s role in pandemic recovery and day‑to‑day student supports, and several praised Michelle (AmeriCorps program lead) and Carrie (administrative support) for program leadership. The board described AmeriCorps members’ work ranging from one‑on‑one tutoring to gardening education and math support and urged the public to support continued funding.
Members introduced at the meeting included George Sullivan, Dan Sullivan, Clara Sullivan, Darby, Lynn McDonald, Mikey and Michaela (full names as presented at the meeting). The board gave certificates of recognition and called attention to AmeriCorps’ role in strengthening local pipelines into district employment.
