Canton School Committee approves 2025–26 school calendar, reaffirms Wednesday professional-development schedule

The Canton School Committee unanimously approved the 2025–26 school calendar at its Feb. 6 meeting.

During a second reading and vote, district leaders explained that the calendar keeps the same start- and end-of-year framework presented at the prior meeting, adjusts one early-release listing for consistency, and reflects staffing and construction considerations tied to the new Galvin Middle School project. The committee voted 5–0 to adopt the calendar as shown.

Committee members asked for clearer communications to families about the value and purpose of professional development days. Superintendent Follin and calendar lead Miss Rooney described district practice: professional development days are scheduled to maximize adult learning, to support curriculum rollouts and program reviews (for example, math and science program reviews), and to align with district strategic goals. The administration said their analysis of high-performing schools and operational experience suggests midweek (Wednesday) early releases produce better engagement and learning for staff than alternatives such as Fridays.

Miss Rooney and other staff described how early-release days are used for building-based PD, department-based calibration (for example, math teachers aligning instruction), implementation of new IEP procedures, and content-specific training for paraprofessionals and aides. The committee requested the administration continue explaining the value of PD to families ahead of implementation so parents understand the tradeoffs in schedule choice.

Calendar clarifications mentioned during the discussion: students in grades 1–12 will begin Tuesday, Sept. 2; pre-K and kindergarten students would begin Thursday, Sept. 4; staff workdays are scheduled for Aug. 27–28. The superintendent said the district would publish a finalized calendar and send reminders to families about early-release and conference days.
