Superintendent Follin highlights student arts awards, athletics and upcoming DESE report cards

Superintendent Follin opened the district report with updates on inclement-weather decisions and a series of student recognitions.
Follin said the district closed schools for a recent snow-and-ice event to keep students and staff safe, and that grounds crews had cleared lots and prepared for additional storms expected that weekend and the following week. She said the district would publish an updated school calendar and post inclement-weather guidelines and that some families had not received PowerSchool text alerts because they had not opted in; the district will send instructions on how to opt in.
Follin listed students who earned Scholastic Art & Writing and Emerging Young Artists awards: Gavin Pichard (Gold Key, photography); Caitlin Turesky (honorable mention, photography); Amelia Chambon (honorable mention, illustration); Bella Kowalski (Silver Key, photography); Avery Bridal (honorable mention, flash fiction); Morgan Smith (Silver Key, flash fiction); and, from Emerging Young Artists and Designers, Lily Duong, James Connolly, Dan Albert, Bella Kowalski, Lisonbee Lynn and John Mooney. She also noted Sonya Lee’s acceptance to the Massachusetts Music Educators Association All-State Orchestra and eighth-grader Jacob Solette’s selection for the 2025 Contemporary Creators Festival.
Follin congratulated the boys hockey team for winning the Hockomock (Hockmark) League Davenport championship and noted teams advancing to district playoffs. She said the district would circulate DESE school report cards to the public (district report card to be sent the next day and individual school report cards the following Monday).
She reminded the committee of calendar items and upcoming events: an early release on Feb. 12, a Black History Month event hosted by CDI on Feb. 26 at Topgolf, celebration of school counselors during Counselor Appreciation Week and National School Resource Officer Day on Feb. 15, naming Officers Ensley Kotod, Steven Malaney and Eric Kaskovich as the district’s SROs. Follin closed by thanking staff and noting continuing communications and operational follow-ups related to weather and messaging.
