Adams County staff to clear obstruction trees at airport approach; committee reviews parks and maintenance updates

County staff told the Property & Recreation and Building Committee they are working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Bureau of Aeronautics to remove trees that obstruct the airport’s north approach. Staff said the tree clearing affects multiple parcels—county land, Humane Society land, Town of Adams land and a small portion of 4-H property—and that a logger and DNR assistance are expected; proceeds from timber could be shared with affected owners, staff said.
Airport staff earlier reported a separate pending land acquisition at the south end of the airport that will also require approach clearance once the county completes transfer.
Parks staff noted plans to allow ATVs on park roads east of County Z at Castle Rock Park for the upcoming season; the committee discussed placement of maintenance facilities and future trail loops on the park’s east side. Parks staff said the new maintenance shop is planned for the east side of the park and that future loops would be added to that area.
Maintenance updates included a brief status note on the Veterans Memorial (frost blankets were recently removed from the concrete) and repeated concern about parking areas near the courthouse that are eroding and in poor condition. Staff recommended doing the worst parking-area work as a single project to obtain better pricing and improve circulation. Committee members asked staff to prioritize parking repairs and to consider doing multiple parking areas at once to reduce unit costs.
Other operational items covered in staff reports included off-season boat/vehicle storage rates ($60/month or $2/day) at park facilities and an ongoing effort to remove unauthorized sap-bagging and tree-tapping activity; parks staff said they are contacting the individual conducting sap-bagging to stop the practice.
Staff will pursue the DNR-assisted tree removal at the airport, refine plans for Castle Rock Park maintenance and parking work, and return with cost estimates and a timeline for parking repairs.
