Sharon School Committee adopts teacher-backed calendar amid debate over half days and start date

The Sharon School Committee voted 5–2 on Feb. 5 to adopt a school-year calendar that would start before Labor Day and include a mix of full and half days for certain religious observances and professional development.

The vote follows weeks of debate and three calendar proposals submitted to the committee by the Sharon Teachers Association (STA). Committee members said the STA supplied the three versions to reflect teacher membership preferences and to avoid starting before Labor Day without mutual agreement.

The calendar approved by the committee — labeled Calendar 2 during the meeting — keeps a number of full days off (for example, Rosh Hashanah day 1 and Yom Kippur) and retains the district’s usual complement of early-release days for professional development and parent–teacher conferences. The committee recorded roll-call votes: Julie (chair) — yes; Adam — yes; Dan — yes; Allen — yes; Avi — yes; Jeremy — no; Shauna — no. The motion passed 5–2. The committee said the adopted calendar will be sent to the STA for ratification and an administrative review to confirm any remaining scheduling or operational details.

Why it matters: The calendar determines when instruction occurs, affects family schedules and summer programming, and interfaces with the STA collective-bargaining agreement. Several speakers, including committee members and a range of public commenters, argued competing priorities: limiting the number of disruptive half days, honoring religious observances, and protecting the district’s instructional continuity.

Supporters argued the approved calendar balanced competing demands while allowing a pre–Labor Day start if negotiated with the STA. School Committee member Avi, chair of the calendar committee, said the STA provided three versions that reflected teacher survey results and recommended the full set be considered. "The STA took the time and the energy to create these 3 versions," Avi said during the discussion.

Opponents, including members of the public and two committee members, said Calendar 2 added too many early-release days and would be disruptive for working families. Committee member Jeremy cautioned the community about the number of half days, saying "That seems very disruptive. It's a lot of half days or working parents, especially, who have to work go into an office." Other members pressed administration to reduce the number of half days where contractually feasible.

Key details: Calendar 2 includes the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and January 2 as no-school days, winter break from Dec. 24 through Jan. 2, and a proposed first day of school of Aug. 27 on the calendar materials presented at the meeting. Committee members requested that the vote be contingent on administration verifying professional-development and scheduling requirements and reducing half days where possible.

Next steps: The committee will send the approved version to the Sharon Teachers Association for ratification and asked administration to confirm operational details and minimize half days consistent with contractual and programmatic needs.
