Town seeks $69,960 to redesign Elliott School playfield and playground for safety, accessibility

The Town of Needham's Parks and Forestry Department presented a $69,960 design request on March 12 to redesign and renovate the Elliott School playfield and playground. The proposal seeks design funds to address an undersized, heavily used field, outdated playground surfacing and drainage issues.

Superintendent Edward Olsen said Elliott School serves about 450 students and its outdoor spaces are shared by many user groups, including the school, Park and Rec summer camp and neighborhood families. Olsen noted the existing engineered wood-fiber playground surfacing is not accessible and that the field shows wear from heavy daily use; subsurface drainage infrastructure also requires repair.

Scope and rationale: The design request would fund engineering and design to replace playground surfacing with accessible rubberized surfacing, overlay and improvements to the basketball court, repair of an underground drainage pipe beneath the field and improved accessible walkways tying the site to nearby trails (including the Sudbury aqueduct). Olsen said the project has been in the department's capital plan for many years and that the town will convene user-group meetings and neighborhood outreach during design.

Public comment: Neighbors expressed support for the renovation. A nearby resident asked that large construction vehicles respect a private road (Crane Street) used by neighbors and requested coordination to avoid damage to a newly repaved private road.

Next steps: If CPC design funds are approved, Parks and Forestry will form a working group, finalize designs and provide a construction estimate for a future funding round; construction is targeted for summer 2026 if the design and funding timeline proceeds on schedule.
