Get Outdoors Nevada leads CCSD fourth-graders on Nevada State Railroad Museum field trip

Get Outdoors Nevada led fourth-graders from McCaw STEAM Academy on a trip to the Nevada State Railroad Museum, organizers said, bringing lessons about Nevada history and the Hoover Dam into a hands-on setting.

Organizers said the visit — one of about 20 Clark County School District (CCSD) field trips Get Outdoors Nevada organized this school year — let students see and walk through historic railroad cars tied to regional history, reinforcing classroom lessons on Nevada state history.

A Nevada State Railroad Museum staff member said, "We are 1 of the 7 state museums here. We have trains that were actually involved in the construction of the Hoover Dam, which is something that they're learning about in their classroom right now in their Nevada State history, you know, lessons. So coming out and actually seeing them, being able to experience them, walk through them, it brings that what they're learning in the classroom, it really brings it to life." The staff member spoke while guiding students through exhibit cars and explaining connections to local history.

A fourth-grade student described the experience: "My favorite part was going in the in the big ones and, looking all over and, like, experience it how, like, it is in real life." Other students called out artifacts they recognized, with one guide asking, "You look to your left. What do you think that is? A Caboose." and students responding.

Organizers and the recording noted that Get Outdoors Nevada is a nonprofit that relies on community support and volunteers; the segment identified Allison Kasner as a family member on the trip who helped start the outings because she previously worked in CCSD as a teacher and principal.
