Kaylin Kindred, a junior at El Dorado High School, won the Nevada Reading Week student art contest and designed this year’s official logo for the statewide reading campaign "Color Our World with Books," an event announcer said.
Organizers presented Kindred’s design as the contest’s grand prize winner during a brief announcement. The announcer said more than 750 students from across Nevada entered the contest; the winning art will be used on T-shirts, flyers and on the Nevada Reading Week website.
"What I like about drawing is that you can just basically create anything," Kindred said, describing why she entered. She told listeners she kept her submission simple, depicting books as characters that color the world to match the year’s theme.
A speaker on the announcement said the contest grew out of the spring rollout of the Nevada Reading Week theme and that school librarians had circulated contest information; Kindred’s librarian forwarded the details and she entered through her school’s National Art Honor Society. The announcer said the design was selected in part because it appealed to students from elementary through high school.
Kindred said she was surprised to win and pleased to see her art displayed statewide. "It was pretty worth it because I got to see my art up in a website and all around Nevada," she said.
Comments of congratulations followed from others at the event. The announcement did not include prize details beyond the statewide use of the design and did not specify judging criteria or the number and names of jurors.
