Tourism council trims Navy Days request to $50,000 after debate over room-night projections

The Escambia County Tourist Development Council voted to reduce a requested $100,000 funding contribution for Navy Days to $50,000 on March 13, after extended discussion over whether the event would generate enough hotel room nights and out-of-market visitors to justify the larger award.

Supporters said Navy Days — a multi-day community celebration recognizing the military that includes a run, parade, gala and family festival — brings regional visitors and civic recognition for Pensacola’s military presence. Opponents said last year’s weather and the event’s limited demonstrated hotel-night generation made the full $100,000 request hard to justify.

The council’s decision came after presentations from event organizers, including Dan McCourt, who described the weeklong plan and said, “we are asking for a hundred thousand dollars of support.” The Navy Days budget in the packet was listed at just over $250,000; organizers said they had secured sponsorships to cover part of that total.
