La Porte ISD outlines summer learning options; high school "summer rescue" credit recovery will charge modest fees

La Porte ISD administrators presented the district’s summer learning plan March 11, detailing remediation, credit-recovery and enrichment offerings for students from pre-K through high school.
Elementary options include English learner (EL) programming that meets the Texas Education Agency requirement of 120 hours and an elementary promotion program (grades 3–5) for students who did not pass STAAR. Primary reading and pre-K/kindergarten camps will operate in small groups on home campuses to target specific early literacy skills.
For secondary students, junior-high offerings focus on students who did not meet STAAR promotion requirements. High school students will have end-of-course (EOC) preparation sessions and a new "Summer Rescue" credit-recovery program for courses students failed during the year. Administrators said the program is intended as a final, focused opportunity to regain credit before the new school year. The district announced a per-class fee: $40 for one class or $80 for two classes, with a discounted rate of $20 per class for students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. "We are starting with, if you are a student who needs 1 class, it's $40 for that class. Now if you are qualifying for the discount, it would be $20 per class," a district staff member explained.
Administrators said charging a modest fee is intended to increase student commitment and attendance, noting the district had charged for such programs in earlier years but stopped and is now reinstating a limited charge. The district also listed enrichment camps — GT, fine arts, STEM (including an outside provider for Camp Invention), Galveston Bay Foundation field experiences and athletic training camps — and said dates and registration information will be released after spring break, with a target of April 1 or shortly thereafter.
No board vote was required for the program descriptions and fees at the March 11 meeting; administrators said they will finalize and publish schedules after spring break so families can make plans.
