Superintendent highlights student awards, grants, sock drive and upcoming facilities work study

Superintendent Dr. Todd used his report to highlight student and staff achievements and upcoming district events, telling trustees that Moreland students and staff have recently won awards and led community service drives.
Dr. Todd announced that Anderson Elementary fourth-grader Haydah Hussain won the district-level Future Chefs competition and will be eligible to advance to the regional competition for her Afghan pasta recipe. He also noted that R. Morland School District nurse Tanya Batnick received the California School Nurses Organization award for excellence in school nursing at the CSNO conference on Feb. 13.
The superintendent reported that the Moreland Education Foundation (MEF) awarded roughly $14,000 in grants this cycle to support student projects, including funding for a Gaga ball pit and STEM lunch clubs at Latimer Elementary. He described Read Across America activities and a district LCAP survey launched for staff and families with a stated deadline of March 14.
Trustees also heard about student-led fundraising: one school raised just under $12,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and another marketplace raised about $2,000 for recent Los Angeles fire victims. Latimer Elementary collected more than 2,000 pairs of socks in a sock drive that earned coverage on NBC Bay Area.
Dr. Todd told trustees the district facilities committee will present recommendations on phase 2 and phase 3 facility work during a May 27 work study session; the board agreed to add that meeting to calendars. He also reminded trustees of the NEF 5K on March 29 and the district's employee-of-the-year celebration on May 13.
Separately, the meeting included a student presentation: students from Country Lane Elementary introduced new student clubs (including a trash pickup/cleanup club, arts and Pokemon/drawing clubs) and led the flag salute. Trustees praised the student leaders and encouraged continued engagement.
