City Council heard presentations from six outside agencies seeking operating or program support and updating council on recent activity.
Southwest Virginia EMS Council asked the city to continue a $5,000 annual contribution and described regional training, medical direction, critical-incident stress management and accreditation work supporting 13 counties and three cities. Presenters said the council runs American Heart Association training programs, EMT classes and grants assistance for local rescue squads.
Matt Bolas of Explore Bristol (the Bristol Regional Tourism Marketing Corporation) reviewed the nonprofit’s marketing and partner work, reporting about 4 million impressions year to date from digital campaigns, seasonal advertising strategies and expanded co-operative promotion across the Tennessee–Virginia border. Bolas said Explore Bristol is leveraging print visitor guides, airport displays and targeted social campaigns to drive lodging and dining tax revenues.
Maggie Elliott presented for Believe in Bristol and requested $70,000 for fiscal 2026 to expand the Border Bash concert series for its 25th anniversary, continue an entrepreneur grant program and fund façade-improvement and placemaking activities downtown. Elliott said downtown Bristol had more than 36,000 unique website visitors and social-media reach of about 300,000 in 2024 and that downtown’s businesses generate restaurant and lodging tax revenue within the district.
Shawna Tilson of EO outlined regional workforce, early-childhood and career-pathways programs and requested $10,000 in city support to expand programming into the city. EO described Career Commons experiential career-exploration programming that has hosted thousands of students and said the organization trains early-childhood educators and runs paid student internships.
Melissa Roberts for the Birthplace of Country Music requested $50,000 for the museum and Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion festival. Roberts said the museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate, that the festival draws tens of thousands of attendees and that recent audience and media reports estimate more than $21 million in economic impact from nonregional festival visitors.
Rachel (last name not provided) joined by Zoom to represent Feeding Southwest Virginia and asked for a $2,000 Bristol allocation; she said $2,000 would fund about 4,000 meals and described the organization’s mobile pantries, children’s farmers markets and senior programs in the region.
Ending: Council members thanked speakers and noted that many of the requests would be evaluated during the city’s budget process; no appropriation votes took place this meeting.
