Board recognizes two National Merit finalists and welcomes scout troop

At its March 11 meeting the Kingsport City Schools Board of Education recognized two Dobbins Minna High School seniors — Liam Klug and Claire Lee — for advancing to finalist standing in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Dr. Philip Marshall introduced the recognition and praised the students’ classroom achievements and extracurricular contributions. Staff noted the nationwide competition will award about 6,870 scholarships worth more than $26 million; the nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors. Claire Lee told the board she has decided to attend Duke University; Liam Klug had not yet chosen a college at the time of the meeting.
The board also welcomed a visiting scout troop (Troop 48), and a scout explained activities including first aid, CPR training and wilderness first-aid work toward Eagle Scout requirements. Board members commended the troop’s leaders and the students for community involvement.
No formal board votes were required for the recognitions.
