Haverford Township board elects Dr. Matthew C. Hayes as superintendent

The board approved the motion during a special work meeting called to order March 12. The contract and election were presented “pursuant to section 10 73 of the Public School Code,” the agenda said. Board members said the district conducted an extensive search and welcomed Hayes’s experience and collaborative approach.
Board members noted the district reviewed almost 50 candidates during the search and held multiple interviews and a community forum in the days before the vote. Danielle Vitale, who was traveling and did not attend, provided a written statement read aloud at the meeting in which she wrote, “I wanted to write a statement of my strong support for Dr. Matthew Hayes as the next superintendent of the School District of Haverford Township.”
Speakers at the meeting thanked the Delaware County Intermediate Unit (DCIU) and Dr. Elderberg for their assistance in the search process and said the community forum was recorded for those who could not attend. The board also appointed Tricia McCunney as acting board secretary for the special meeting before the superintendent vote.
Roll call on the superintendent motion recorded eight yes votes: Miss Lee, Dr. McKay, Mr. Schwartz, Dr. Shelton, Miss Snodgrass, Miss Wiedemann, Dr. Larson and Dr. King. Miss Vitale was absent due to travel. The presiding officer announced, “The motion passes.”
No public commenters signed up for either public-comment period on the agenda. The board adjourned after announcing the next regular public meeting scheduled for March 20, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wharton of the Oakmont Administration Building.
The contract approved by the board specifies the five-year term from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2030, and lists salary and fringe benefits; additional contract details were referenced on the agenda packet and are part of the district’s personnel records.
